Black and white or value is always drilled into every art students head as the most important thing to remember in composition. And a sure way to test an illustration is to view it in black and white. Of course I forgot to do that while watercoloring the pages, so I gave myself a pop quiz when I opened my Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of Night Chef and saw all my watercolors were standing there in black and white. Of course it doesn’t really matter since the real book will be printed in full color but still its good to see how the compositions hold up without the pretty colors to help them along.
